As obvious as Albert Einstein's advice seems, most software applications continue to be more complex than they need to be. Whether driven by a desire to please everyone, or the urge to use all of the latest nifty techniques and technology, many projects are needlessly over-engineered by the time they see the light of day. Over-engineering costs time and money in all phases of development, from planning to testing and deployment. It can even hurt when it's supposed to help - a year later when work starts beginning on enhancements to the original project.

Of course, the second part of Einstein's advice is just as important as the first. Oversimplification can hurt a plan as much --or even more-- than over-engineering. Great care must be made to look ahead and plan for the future, so that changes and enhancements can be made as quickly and inexpensively as possible.

Einstein's advice can be applied to an application or website's interface as well. When you visit a website or launch a program for the first time, you should already know how it works. Before you click that link or button, you should know exactly how it will behave, and you should already know where you need to go or what you need to do to get the information you want. Written documentation and help files have their place, but not as a substitute for poor design.

EnvisionSolutions believes that every application should be designed with flexibility and potential for expansion in mind, that doing too much can be as bad as doing too little, and that for all of the flashy technologies available, one shouldn't lose sight of the fact that most users want to get the job done and get on with their lives.
